It can be a real bummer, sometimes, having a birthday so close to Christmas. It’s cold outside, it gets dark by 5 pm, and people feel wiped out from the holiday season and are tired of celebrating. “Oh, and happy birthday,” they say with a weary soul. “Here’s your combo gift.”
But one of the perks of being an early January baby is that you get a double whammy of the “fresh start”. A new year and a new age - two reasons to reflect on the past 365 days of your life and contemplate all the changes to come.
I stopped making New Year’s resolutions a few years ago, and started writing a list of goals. A big difference for me was that instead of existing as a negative: “I resolve not to stay up so late”, they were framed in the positive: “I will go to bed by midnight.”
Clearly that particular one isn’t always achieved, as I’m writing this at 1:45 am. But I have made and met a fair number of them over the past few years.
One of my favorite quotes has always been: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” I love the idea that no matter how unattainable a goal appears at the beginning, as long as you consistently take action, then you will reach the destination.
At the beginning of 2018 I had no idea what lay beyond the horizon. Once my adventures in jewelry began, though, it only took a few angst-filled months to go from having nothing to the start of something new and exciting.
Now it’s 2019, it's my birthday, and there’s a little more sunlight illuminating our world every day. It’s time for me to create a new list of intentions. But first, sleep, and perhaps a dream or two.
